Topics covered at the Sixth Annual Child Welfare Law Update on August 9, 2013:
* An update of current and new policies and initiatives planned by the Department of Human Services, Department of Health, Department of Education, and the First Circuit Family Court
* Federal and state statutory and case law updates
* “Overview of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA)”: Anita Fineday, Casey Family Programs’ Managing Director of Indian Child Welfare Practices, will provide an overview of the ICWA, including definitions for specific terminology and the differentiation between reasonable efforts and active efforts; and discuss the recent ICWA case that was recently heard by the United States Supreme Court. Ms. Fineday will also facilitate a panel of child welfare system participants, focusing on the state’s application of the ICWA.
* Former foster youth, Daryle Conquering Bear, will speak about the importance of and the cultural impact of the ICWA for foster youth with Native American heritage.
